Te mapa
Esquipulas lies in the department of Chiquimula in eastern Guatemala, close to the borders with Honduras and El Salvador. It sits in a valley surrounded by forested mountains. On a map, the town's regular street grid fills the valley floor, and the steep slopes around it remain largely open.
The town is known across Central America for the Basilica of the Black Christ, the Cristo Negro, which draws large numbers of pilgrims every year, especially around the January festival. Its name is also attached to the Esquipulas peace agreements of the 1980s, which laid groundwork for ending the region's civil conflicts.
An Esquipulas map poster shows the orderly blocks of the town gathered in the valley, the basilica grounds as a distinct open space, and the roads winding out through the hills toward the border. It is a composed, balanced image of a small town with a large place in the region's faith and history.
The Basilica of the Black Christ and its open surroundings form the town's focal point, visible as a distinct space within the grid.
Streets follow a regular block pattern across the valley floor, a clear and orderly structure amid the mountains.
Roads leave the valley in curving lines, climbing through the hills toward the nearby borders with Honduras and El Salvador.
