Founding grid
The 1854 street plan still shapes the center as a regular pattern of square blocks, streets and small plazas that reads especially well in black and white.

Te mapa
Santa Tecla lies just west of San Salvador, on the lower southern slopes of the San Salvador volcano. From above, the historic center is a regular grid of streets and blocks. It was laid out when the town was founded in 1854 as Nueva San Salvador, intended as a new capital after an earthquake damaged the old one.
The capital later returned to San Salvador, but Santa Tecla kept its planned core, with squares and parks placed along its streets. Newer neighbourhoods have spread beyond it, climbing the volcano's slopes and running south towards the coastal range, where the street network becomes more winding.
A Santa Tecla map poster shows an orderly town set within dramatic terrain. The straight grid in the center contrasts with the curving roads that follow the volcanic slopes. Paseo El Carmen, the pedestrian street in the old town, has become a well-known gathering place.
The 1854 street plan still shapes the center as a regular pattern of square blocks, streets and small plazas that reads especially well in black and white.
To the north the land rises towards the San Salvador volcano, and the streets there bend and thin out as the slope becomes steeper.
Main roads run east to San Salvador, joining the two cities into one continuous urban area across the valley.
