Te mapa
Estelí sits in a valley in the northern highlands of Nicaragua, surrounded by mountains and pine-covered ridges. On the map, the city is a remarkably regular grid of blocks, laid out in the Spanish colonial pattern and stretching along the valley floor between the surrounding slopes.
Two long lines frame the plan. The Pan-American Highway runs north to south along one side of the city, and the Estelí River follows the valley on the other, its bends softening the edge of the grid. Between them lie the central square, the cathedral and the markets that anchor daily life.
An Estelí map poster also reflects the city's reputation as a centre of cigar making. Tobacco grows in the surrounding valleys, and the factories spread along the outskirts and highway. The valley's elevation gives the city a cooler climate than the Pacific lowlands, and on the print the tight grid stands out against the open land around it.
Evenly spaced blocks cover most of the city, a clear example of the Spanish planning tradition, with the central park and cathedral at the heart of the pattern.
The international highway runs along the city on its way to Honduras, a straight, strong line that guides the whole layout of the map.
The river winds along the valley floor on the other side of the city, adding a natural curve to an otherwise strict geometric plan.

Koteā ko Estelí
Estelí is a place people carry with them, whether they grew up in its barrios, studied there or visited the tobacco farms. The clear grid and the river make a composed, almost architectural image that looks good in any room.
