Te mapa
Gongju lies in South Chungcheong Province, in the valley of the Geum River, one of the major rivers of central Korea. The old centre is on the south bank, overlooked by wooded hills, and newer districts spread across the north bank. From above, the river curves broadly through the city, bridges link the two sides, and hills press in from every direction.
Under the name Ungjin, Gongju was the capital of the Baekje kingdom from 475 to 538. Gongsanseong Fortress, whose walls follow the ridge above the river, and the royal tombs at Songsan-ri, including the tomb of King Muryeong, belong to the Baekje Historic Areas. These were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
A Gongju map poster shows how the city fits into its landscape. The fortress walls trace an irregular line along the ridge, the Geum forms a strong band of water, and the old town's streets fill the flat land between river and hills. The composition has real depth, balancing history, water and terrain.
The fortress walls follow the crest of a hill above the south bank of the Geum, forming an irregular outline that is one of the city's most recognisable shapes.
The wide river curves through the city, crossed by several bridges and lined with open banks and riverside parks that separate the old and new districts.
The royal tomb complex lies on a wooded slope west of the old centre. This quiet green space holds the burial of King Muryeong.
