Te mapa
Daejeon lies in a basin in central South Korea, ringed by low mountains. Three main streams, the Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon and Daejeoncheon, run north through the city towards the Geum River. Their green banks form long, parallel lines across the map. Daejeon grew as a railway junction where the lines to Seoul, Busan and the southwest met.
In recent decades it has become Korea's research hub. The Daedeok Innopolis district in the north is home to national research institutes and KAIST, the leading science and technology university. Daejeon hosted Expo 1993, and the Expo park remains beside the Gapcheon. A government complex brings many state agencies to the city.
A Daejeon map poster shows how the city fits into its basin. The streams divide it into districts, the older centre gathers near the railway station, and planned newer areas extend westward. The surrounding mountains form a soft green border on all sides. It is a clear, calm composition that suits the city's measured character.
The Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon and Daejeoncheon run through the city side by side. They create long lines of water and parkland from south to north.
The research district to the north has larger campus blocks and more greenery. It contrasts with the tighter streets of the older centre.
Low forested mountains surround the city. They leave its edges open, so the urban core stands out clearly on the page.
