Te mapa
Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for close to a thousand years, and that ancient past still shapes the map. The city occupies a basin surrounded by hills, with the Hyeongsan River and its tributaries curving along its western and northern sides. Building heights are restricted in the historic centre, so the streets stay low and open, broken up by large green spaces.
The most striking of these spaces are the tumuli, grassy royal burial mounds grouped in parks near the centre, including the Daereungwon complex. Nearby stand the Cheomseongdae observatory, among the oldest surviving astronomical structures in East Asia, and the reconstructed palace pond of Donggung and Wolji. On a map they appear as a chain of soft green shapes within the street grid.
To the southeast, Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto sit on the slopes of Tohamsan and are listed by UNESCO, as are the Gyeongju Historic Areas. Bomun Lake, a resort area, lies east of the centre. A Gyeongju map poster shows how a modern city has grown around, rather than over, one of the most important archaeological landscapes in Korea.

The river bends along the western side of the city. Its tributaries frame the historic core and give the basin its natural outline.
A reservoir east of the centre, surrounded by hotels, paths and parkland, adds a large area of open water to a wider framing of the map.
