Yangsan lies in southeastern Korea, between Busan and Ulsan, in valleys running down toward the Nakdong River. Mountains rise steeply on several sides, so development follows the flat ground: large apartment districts line the Yangsan River, and a newer planned town spreads over land near the Nakdong.
The city is home to Tongdosa, one of Korea's most important Buddhist temples, in the foothills of Yeongchuksan. Tongdosa is included in the UNESCO listing of Korean mountain monasteries. Pusan National University also has a campus and hospital here.
