Te mapa
Geoje is an island city off the southern coast of South Korea, south-west of Busan. It is the country's second-largest island after Jeju. From above, the coastline is intensely indented: long peninsulas, deep bays and scattered islets surround a hilly interior. Towns and villages cluster at the heads of the bays, linked by roads that wind between the hills.
Geoje is one of the world's leading shipbuilding centres, with major shipyards at Okpo and Gohyeon building tankers, container ships and offshore platforms. During the Korean War, the island held a large prisoner-of-war camp, now a museum. Since 2010 the Geoga Bridge and tunnel have linked it directly to Busan.
A Geoje map poster is essentially a coastline drawing. The irregular shoreline dominates the frame, the built-up areas appear as dense clusters around the harbours, and the large rectilinear shipyards stand out against the natural curves of the bays and mountains.
Geoje's shore folds into countless bays and headlands. At map scale it creates a highly complex outline, one of the most intricate you can put on a poster.
The shipyards at Okpo and Gohyeon occupy large, flat, geometric sites on the water. Their docks and piers contrast sharply with the natural shape of the coast around them.
The Geoga Bridge and immersed tunnel connect the island's north-east with Busan. The link appears as a thin line across open water that ties Geoje to the mainland.

Koteā ko Geoje
Geoje is special to shipbuilders, to families who moved there for the yards and to travellers who explored its coast. The complex shoreline turns the island into an almost abstract composition that is compelling on a large wall.
