Tsushima lies in the Korea Strait between Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula, closer to Busan than to mainland Japan. It is long and narrow, running north to south, and almost entirely mountainous and forested. From above, most of the island is steep wooded ground, with towns squeezed onto small patches of flat land at the heads of bays.
At its middle lies Asō Bay, a drowned ria coast of countless inlets, islets and peninsulas that nearly cuts the island in two. A narrow channel dug in 1900 completes the split, so the map shows two main islands joined by a bridge. Izuhara, the principal town, sits on the southeast coast, and a road runs the length of the island.
Tsushima has long been a bridge between Japan and Korea, a stopping point for envoys and trade over centuries. The waters to its east gave their name to the Battle of Tsushima in 1905. A Tsushima Island map poster turns one of the strait's most complex coastlines into a detailed black-and-white study, with Asō Bay as its intricate centre.

The channel dug across the narrow neck of the island in 1900 separates north from south. It appears as a short, sharp line of water, crossed by a single bridge.
The main town on the southeast coast, set in a valley that opens onto a harbour. Its compact streets are one of the few dense clusters on this largely wooded island.

Koteā ko Tsushima Island
Tsushima appeals to anyone drawn to borderlands: a Japanese island within sight of Korea on clear days, with a coastline more complex than most maps can hold. It suits travellers, history readers and anyone with ties to Nagasaki Prefecture.
