Te mapa
Hadong is a county in the far west of Gyeongsangnam-do, set along the lower Seomjin River, which forms part of the boundary with Jeollanam-do. On a map, the main town clusters on the riverbank where the valley opens toward the sea, and roads trace the river upstream between steep, wooded hills. Much of the county's northern side rises into the Jirisan massif, one of Korea's largest mountain areas.
The county is best known for green tea. The Hwagae valley, leading up toward Ssanggyesa Temple, is often described as one of the places where tea cultivation began in Korea, and terraced tea gardens still cover the slopes there. The Hwagae market, on the old crossing point between the two provinces, is another familiar name. A Hadong map poster shows how closely all of this follows the lines of water and valley.
Because the land is so steep, the street pattern is shaped by contours rather than by a plan. Roads run parallel to the Seomjin, branch into side valleys and fade out as the hills rise. The river itself is wide and sandy in its lower reach, and it becomes the dominant form on the poster, a broad band that anchors every other line.
A wide river with sandbars runs along the county's western edge, giving the map a strong, flowing boundary between two provinces.
A narrow side valley climbs toward Ssanggyesa Temple, lined with tea terraces, its single road winding between steep slopes.
To the north the settlements thin out as the land rises into the Jirisan massif, leaving the upper part of the poster calm and open.

Koteā ko Hadong
Hadong draws people who have walked its tea slopes, visited the temples in spring or grew up along the Seomjin. A map of the valley brings back the feeling of the place, river, hills and small roads, without spelling it out.
