Te mapa
Izalco lies in the Sonsonate department of western El Salvador, on land that rises from the coastal plain toward the volcanic highlands. The town grew from two historic settlements, Dolores and Asunción, and its layout still has more than one centre, each with its own church and plaza. The streets follow a broadly regular pattern, bending where the ground slopes or streams cut through.
North-east of the town rises the Izalco volcano, a steep, young cone that was almost constantly active from its birth in 1770 until the mid-twentieth century. Its glow could be seen from the sea, which earned it the name Lighthouse of the Pacific. On the map, the ground around it is marked by lava fields, coffee farms and roads winding up the slopes.
Izalco also has a strong Nahua-Pipil indigenous heritage, and its traditions are still part of local life. An Izalco map poster brings together the town's twin centres, its streets and the land rising toward the volcano, in a composition shaped by both history and geology.
The town's two historic cores, each with a church and a plaza, show as separate areas of density on the map, joined by the streets that run between them.
North-east of the town, the ground rises toward the Izalco cone. Lava fields and farm roads create uneven, textured shapes along that edge of the poster.
Winding roads climb through coffee farms on the higher slopes, their curves adding a layer of fine, organic detail above the town's streets.
