Te mapa
Kholmsk lies on the west coast of Sakhalin Island, facing the Tatar Strait. Between 1905 and 1945 it was the Japanese town of Maoka, and it is now one of the island's main ports, with a ferry link across the strait to Vanino on the mainland. The town is long and narrow, squeezed between sea and mountains.
The map shows this clearly. A strip of streets follows the shore, the harbour breakwaters reach out into the water, and the rest of the town climbs the slopes in layers, with roads zigzagging up into the valleys. Behind it, the hills rise quickly and the map becomes mostly empty, cut only by streams and a few roads.
A Kholmsk map poster shows a town defined by its edge. The harbour, piers and the straight coastal line of the town form a strong horizontal, while the switchback streets add texture above them. It is a map of a working port at the far eastern edge of Russia, precise and quietly dramatic.
Long breakwaters and piers extend into the Tatar Strait, enclosing the port where ferries, fishing boats and cargo ships dock, the town's main working space.
The town stretches along a narrow band of shoreline, its main streets running parallel to the sea and giving the map a long, horizontal shape.
Above the shore, roads climb and wind up the valleys in switchbacks, and the built-up area fades into the steep, wooded hills behind the town.

Kholmsk is a place people leave for the mainland and remember by its harbour and hills. A map of the waterfront and hillside streets is a clear, understated way to keep an island home close.
