Te mapa
Kunkujang is in the Western Region of The Gambia, in the Kombo area south-west of Banjul. Towns here have grown quickly as people move out from the crowded coast. The map shows this growth as a web of lanes and compound boundaries spreading outwards, sometimes in rough grids and sometimes following older paths between fields.
The land is low and fairly flat, with farms, woodland and palm stands among the settlements. Main roads connect Kunkujang with nearby towns and with the coastal strip, while most streets inside the settlement are narrow and unpaved. On a map those minor lanes create a dense, textured pattern that becomes looser at the edges.
A Kunkujang map poster shows a community in the middle of change. There is a settled core, newer plots laid out around it and open country beyond. For people with family here, it records the place at a particular moment, and it may look different in a few years.
Narrow lanes run between family compounds and create a close, irregular pattern. It is the most detailed part of the map and reflects how people have settled the land over time.
On the outskirts, newer plots are often laid out in straighter lines. They make small, regular patches next to the more organic older streets.
Farmland and scattered trees surround the settlement. At the edges of the map, streets give way to tracks and open space, which marks the transition to rural Kombo.

Many Gambians abroad keep close ties with their home compounds, and a map of Kunkujang is a meaningful piece to hang far from home. It shows the community as a whole, as a place and not only as a name.
