Te mapa
Léré lies in the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest province of southwestern Chad, close to the border with Cameroon. Its setting is shaped by water: the town sits by Lake Léré, one of a chain of lakes along the Mayo Kebbi river system, which links this part of Chad toward the Benue basin. On a map, the lake's shoreline gives the town a clear edge and orientation.
Léré is also the historic seat of the Moundang kingdom, whose ruler, the Gong of Léré, remains an important traditional authority in the region. The town's layout reflects gradual growth rather than a single plan, with compounds, lanes and open spaces spreading outward from the older centre, and wider roads leading away toward farmland and neighbouring settlements.
A Léré map poster shows the town in balance with its landscape: a web of paths and compounds on land, and the smooth, open surface of the lake beside it. The lakes of this area are known for their wetlands and for sheltering the West African manatee, a rare presence so far inland. The result is spare, calm and closely tied to water.
The lake beside the town forms the largest open shape on the map, its irregular shoreline contrasting with the fine lines of paths and compounds on land.
Lanes and compounds spread outward in an irregular pattern, the product of long, gradual growth, creating a textured, almost hand-drawn quality across the settled area.
Léré lies along the Mayo Kebbi valley, a chain of lakes and river channels that connects southwestern Chad toward the Benue in Cameroon and beyond.

Koteā ko Léré
A map of Léré holds meaning for Moundang families, for people from Mayo-Kebbi living in N'Djamena or abroad, and for anyone who has worked or travelled in this corner of Chad. The lake gives the composition a calm, generous focus.
