Te mapa
Musan-ŭp lies in North Hamgyong Province in the far northeast of North Korea, on the Tumen River, which marks the border with China. The town grew around iron mining, and the Musan mine nearby is often described as one of the largest open-pit iron ore operations in Asia.
On the map, the town is shaped by terrain. Steep, forested hills rise on all sides, and the built-up area follows the narrow valleys and the riverbank. Streets are laid out in modest blocks where the ground allows. Rail and road lines trace the valley floors, linking the mine to the settlement and the wider region.
A Musan-ŭp map poster depicts a place few outsiders will ever visit, drawn from open map data. The river's curve along the border and the tight fit of the town into its valley give the print a strong, self-contained composition. It is a map for those interested in geography at its most remote and unfamiliar.
The river curves along the edge of the town, forming the border with China and giving the map its most prominent natural line.
Blocks of housing and industrial buildings fill the narrow valley floor, their layout constrained by the steep slopes that rise immediately around them.
The iron ore workings in the hills near the town are among the largest in the region, and they shape the roads and rail lines on the map.
