Te mapa
Namyangju lies just east of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, and from above it is less a single city than a series of districts set in valleys between forested mountains. The Han River forms the southern edge. Clusters of tall apartment blocks fill the flatter ground, and expressways and rail lines thread through the gaps between the hills.
Most of the city's growth is recent. Planned new towns have risen alongside older villages, drawing residents from the capital. The city also contains Hongyureung, the tombs of Emperor Gojong and Emperor Sunjong, and it is associated with Jeong Yak-yong, the Joseon-era scholar, whose birthplace lies near the river.
A Namyangju map poster shows an unusual urban form. Dense residential districts, large patches of mountain with almost no streets, the broad Han River and the transport lines linking everything together produce a map that is as much about landscape as about city.
The river runs along the southern side of the city. Its wide, open water provides a strong curving boundary for the composition.
Forested hills separate the districts. On the map they appear as large open areas between clusters of dense streets.
Newer districts have ordered layouts of wide roads and large blocks. They contrast with older villages and the winding mountain roads.

Koteā ko Namyangju
For families who moved out from Seoul, or anyone who knows the Han River trails, Namyangju has a distinctive layered shape. The mix of dense districts and open mountain makes an interesting, rhythmic print.
