Te mapa
Nemuro sits at the far eastern tip of Hokkaido, on the long, low Nemuro Peninsula. It is the easternmost city in Japan, and its map is defined by the sea. The peninsula stretches out between the Pacific Ocean and the Nemuro Strait, ending at Cape Nosappu, the easternmost point of the Japanese main islands that can be reached by ordinary road.
From the cape, on clear days, it is possible to see islands that are administered by Russia and claimed by Japan, a fact that has shaped Nemuro's identity for decades. The city is a fishing port, known for its seafood, including the hanasaki crab, and for frequent sea fog. To the west, Lake Furen, a large lagoon, is an important wetland for birds.
A Nemuro map poster sets a compact town grid against a long coastline on two sides, with the peninsula stretching out toward the open sea. In black and white, the shape is unusual and memorable, a place visibly at the edge of the country. It suits anyone drawn to the far ends of maps as much as those who come from here.
The long, low peninsula runs east from the city with water on both sides, giving the map a distinctive narrow shape that points out into the ocean.
The port sits at the heart of the town, and its quays and breakwaters stand out along the shoreline as the working centre of the city.
Roads thin out as the peninsula continues to Cape Nosappu, the easternmost accessible point of Japan's main islands and a place to watch the first sunrise.

Koteā ko Nemuro
Nemuro appeals to people who like the idea of the end of the road, the last town before the sea. Its title and subtitle can carry a trip date or a family name, and the coordinates line gives its position with suitable precision.
