Ô Chợ Dừa is a ward in Đống Đa district, west of Hanoi's Old Quarter. From above, it shows the intense density of inner Hanoi: a few main roads divide the area into large blocks, and inside them runs a maze of narrow lanes and alleys, many too small for cars, branching and turning between tightly packed houses.
The name comes from one of the historic gates, or ô, of the old city of Thăng Long. Today the area is fully built up, yet the name still recalls that edge of the former capital. Main roads here carry heavy traffic, while daily life happens in the small alleys, markets and cafes between them.
