Te mapa
Qeshm is the largest island in the Persian Gulf, a long, slender shape lying close to Iran's southern coast in the Strait of Hormuz. Its outline, often compared to a fish or a dolphin, runs for well over a hundred kilometres, separated from the mainland by the Khuran Strait, a narrow, shallow channel threaded with mangroves along much of its length.
Those mangroves form the Hara forest, a protected area on the island's north-western side where tidal creeks weave through the trees. Much of the interior is dry, eroded ground, and the island is a UNESCO Global Geopark, known for canyons, salt domes and weathered rock formations such as the Valley of Stars and the Chahkooh gorge. Namakdan, a long salt cave, lies to the south-west.
Qeshm city, at the eastern tip, is the largest town and the main port, facing Bandar Abbas and Hormuz Island across the water. A Qeshm Island map poster captures the island's quiet geometry: a main road running its length, scattered villages, the braided creeks of the mangrove channel and a long, open interior with few roads.
Along the channel between island and mainland, tidal creeks branch through the mangrove forest, forming the most intricate pattern of water anywhere on the map.
The narrow, shallow channel on the northern side keeps the island close to the Iranian coast, so the mainland shoreline often shares the frame.
Qeshm city at the eastern end gathers the island's densest streets around its harbour, looking across to Bandar Abbas and the island of Hormuz.
