Te mapa
Samjiyŏn sits high on the forested plateau of Ryanggang province, in the far north of the Korean peninsula near the border with China. The name refers to the three ponds nearby, and on the map small bodies of water sit among a vast, unbroken surface of forest, with the town itself forming a compact cluster of streets in a clearing.
In recent years the town was comprehensively rebuilt as a planned showcase settlement, and that process is visible from above: straight avenues, evenly spaced residential blocks and large public spaces arranged with deliberate symmetry. Samjiyŏn serves as the main gateway for visits to Mount Paektu, the volcanic peak with a crater lake that holds a central place in Korean national symbolism.
A Samjiyŏn-ŭp map poster is an unusual object, a rare view of a place few people will ever visit, drawn with the same neutral lines as any other city. The contrast between the geometric town and the dense wilderness around it gives the composition its character, especially in the darker styles.
Newly laid-out avenues and uniform blocks give the town a strongly regular, almost architectural pattern, very different from the organic growth of most mountain settlements.
A few small lakes near the town, the source of its name, appear as quiet shapes within the forest and provide the main natural landmarks on the map.
Beyond the edges of town, roads thin out into a wide, sparsely marked expanse of highland forest stretching toward Mount Paektu and the Chinese border.

Koteā ko Samjiyŏn-ŭp
Some people collect maps of places they have lived; others collect places that are hard to reach or rarely seen. Samjiyŏn belongs to the second group, and its clear planned layout makes it an interesting piece for anyone drawn to geography, architecture or the Korean peninsula.
You can set your own title and subtitle and adjust the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, download HD files in six sizes for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
