Te mapa
Sinchu Alagi is a settlement in the Kombo area of the Western Region of The Gambia. It lies in the belt of rapid growth inland from the Atlantic coast and the Serekunda urban area. Over recent decades, land that was farmland and bush has been divided into residential compounds. From above, that growth shows clearly: blocks are laid out in rough grids, with plenty of open ground still between them.
The street pattern here is new. Tracks follow plot boundaries and meet at right angles, but the grids shift direction from one development to the next. In some places they break down where older paths or low ground get in the way. Larger roads tie the area to Brikama, the coast and the capital region. The map records a place that is still being built.
A Sinchu Alagi map poster captures that stage of growth. Dense patches and empty patches alternate, and the lines are sometimes regular and sometimes loose, depending on when each area was laid out. For families who have built compounds here, the map marks the neighbourhood they helped create, at a particular moment in its change.
Each area has its own orientation of streets. The map becomes a mosaic of small grids that meet at uneven angles rather than one continuous pattern.
Unbuilt plots and remaining bush leave blank spaces between built-up blocks. They give the composition room to breathe and show where the settlement is still growing.
Connecting roads lead toward the wider Kombo region and the coast. They tie this new settlement into the urban network around Serekunda and Brikama.
