Te mapa
Sonsonate is the capital of the department of the same name in western El Salvador. It lies on the coastal plain between the volcanic highlands and the Pacific, and a river runs through the city, dividing it into sections connected by bridges. The historic centre follows the regular grid typical of Spanish colonial towns.
The city was founded in the mid-sixteenth century and became an important trading town in the region. Today it serves as a commercial centre for western El Salvador, and the main road southwest leads to Acajutla, the country's principal port on the Pacific coast.
A Sonsonate map poster shows the colonial grid around the central square, the curve of the river through it and the roads leading toward the coast and the highlands. The result is a compact, balanced composition of an old regional city.
Straight streets and square blocks in the historic centre reflect the city's sixteenth century origins, arranged around the main square and cathedral.
The river crosses Sonsonate, creating a natural division within the city. Bridges link its banks and give the map a winding line through the grid.
The main route southwest leads to the Pacific port of Acajutla, linking Sonsonate to El Salvador's most important seaport.
