Te mapa
Summerville lies in the South Carolina low country, northwest of Charleston. It began as a summer retreat for planters and townspeople escaping the coast. In the historic district, streets curve and bend rather than following a strict grid, reportedly to avoid cutting down the pines. Around this older core, the map spreads into large modern subdivisions, highways and wooded land.
The town calls itself the Flower Town in the Pines and is known for its azaleas, celebrated each spring at the Flowertown Festival in Azalea Park. Summerville also promotes itself as the birthplace of sweet tea. The old town square area, with its shops and public space, remains the centre of local life.
A Summerville map poster shows the gentle, irregular heart of the historic district set against the orderly loops of newer neighbourhoods. Parks and green spaces appear as open areas among the streets, and the result is a soft, organic composition quite unlike a planned grid town.

Home of the spring Flowertown Festival, this park appears as a green open area near the centre, with paths and water among the surrounding streets.
Outside the historic core, looping residential streets and cul-de-sacs spread across flat, wooded land towards Charleston and the surrounding county.
