Te mapa
Takikawa sits in central Hokkaido, where the Sorachi River joins the Ishikari, the island's longest river. On the map, the two rivers mark the western and southern edges of town with broad, curving channels. The streets inside follow the neat rectangular grid common to Hokkaido settlements, which were laid out during planned colonisation in the late nineteenth century, and long straight farm roads continue beyond it.
The surrounding plain is farmland, and in late spring the rapeseed fields around Takikawa turn bright yellow and draw many visitors. The town is also known as the home of Matsuo Jingisukan, a local style of grilled marinated lamb that has become associated with Hokkaido cooking. The Takikawa Sky Park airfield is used for gliding.
A Takikawa map poster balances strict geometry with natural curves. The grid of the town and the large rectangular fields contrast with the wide bends and river flats of the Ishikari and Sorachi. The rail line and highway cut diagonally through the pattern, so the composition feels both orderly and gently in motion.
The Sorachi meets the Ishikari at the edge of town, where wide channels and floodplain form the most striking curves on the map.
Straight streets crossing at right angles show the planned layout typical of Hokkaido towns founded during the colonisation era.
Large rectangular farm plots spread out around the town, including the rapeseed fields that turn yellow in late spring.

Koteā ko Takikawa
Takikawa appeals to anyone who likes order in design: the grid, the straight roads and the fields almost look like a drafting exercise, softened by two large rivers. It is also a natural memento of a spring trip to Hokkaido.
