Vel’sk lies in the south of Arkhangelsk Oblast, where the Vel river flows into the larger Vaga. It is one of the older towns of the Russian North, first mentioned in the twelfth century, and it grew as a trading settlement on the river routes through the forests.
From above, the rivers shape everything. The town spreads along their banks, with a simple pattern of streets in the centre and more scattered housing toward the edges. The Vaga bends broadly through the landscape, and floodplain meadows and forest fill the space around the built-up area.
