Te mapa
Vorkuta lies north of the Arctic Circle in the Komi Republic, on the river of the same name, not far from the Polar Urals. It grew up around coal, and its map is unusual. A planned central city of broad avenues and large residential blocks is surrounded by separate settlements, each built beside a mine, and a looping road across the tundra links them.
That loop is known as the Vorkuta Ring, and many of the settlements along it have been partly or completely abandoned as the mines closed. On a Vorkuta map poster the ring and its outlying clusters give the city a structure unlike any other, with open, treeless land filling the spaces between them.
The city's origins are tied to the Gulag. Vorkutlag, one of the largest camp systems, supplied the labour that built the early mines and the railway. Today Vorkuta has no road connection to the rest of Russia and can only be reached by rail or air. Stripped down to lines, the map shows both its isolation and the scale of what was built here.
A road loops around the city, linking former mining settlements. It forms a broad circle on the poster, with small clusters of streets spaced along it.
The core of the city is laid out with wide, straight avenues and large blocks typical of Soviet planning, which gives the centre a firm, orderly geometry.
The river winds through the tundra past the city. It is one of the few natural lines in a landscape otherwise shaped by mines, rail and roads.

Koteā ko Vorkuta
Many people were born in Vorkuta and later moved south, and many families have a history connected to its camps and mines. A map of the city and its ring is a way to acknowledge that story quietly, without images or commentary.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the years you lived there, and edit the coordinates line. Noir and Blueprint suit the stark northern setting, while Paper and Sand soften it. Download six sizes for $9 or order a printed poster.
