Reclaimed shoreline
The coastline along the Pearl River estuary has been pushed outward by reclamation. It forms long straight edges that are clearly different from a natural shore.

Te mapa
Xixiang is a subdistrict of Bao'an District in Shenzhen, Guangdong, on the eastern shore of the Pearl River estuary. On a map, the coastline is the most striking feature. Much of it has been straightened and pushed outward by land reclamation, and new districts with broad, regular street grids occupy the reclaimed land.
Like much of Shenzhen, Xixiang grew rapidly from the 1980s onward, as the city developed from a collection of villages into one of China's largest urban areas. Older village cores with narrow, dense lanes remain within the newer city. Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport lies just to the north along the same coast.
A Xixiang map poster shows the layers of this fast-growing city. The fine lanes of the old villages sit between the wide avenues of the planned districts, and the straight reclaimed shoreline borders the estuary. The overall result is a map full of contrast in scale and texture.

Older village cores remain within the city, with narrow, densely packed lanes that appear as dark patches among the larger blocks.
New districts are laid out on broad, regular grids with wide avenues, especially on the reclaimed land near the water.

Koteā ko Xixiang
Xixiang is where many people arrived in Shenzhen and started a new life. The map records that experience, with old villages, new towers and the estuary all in one frame.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, including with Chinese characters or the year you arrived. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Noir works well with the dense modern grid.
