Te mapa
Hongseong is a county town in the west of South Chungcheong province in South Korea, inland from the Yellow Sea coast. It has a long history as a regional administrative centre. Sections of Hongjuseong, the old walled fortress of the town, still stand in the centre, and a gate and stretches of stone wall are preserved among the modern streets.
From above, the old town is a compact, irregular network of streets around the former fortress, surrounded by newer blocks and the rail line. To the north-west, the Naepo New Town has been built on the boundary with neighbouring Yesan. Since 2013 it has been the seat of the provincial government, and its wide avenues and planned blocks look very different from the older centre.
A Hongseong map poster captures both sides of the county: the old, winding streets of a historic market and administrative town, and the orderly geometry of a new capital district. Farmland and low hills fill the space around them. It suits people from the county and civil servants who moved there with the provincial government.
Surviving sections of the old fortress wall and gate sit in the town centre, the historic heart of an older, irregular street pattern.
The planned district that now houses the South Chungcheong provincial government shows up as wide, regular blocks, in clear contrast with the old town.
Rice fields and low hills fill the land around the town and the new district, leaving open space that frames both areas.

Hongseong is a place of both continuity and change, with fortress walls in one direction and a new capital in the other. Its map suits long-time residents as well as families who arrived with Naepo.
