Te mapa
Nangen, more often written Namwon, sits in the south of Jeollabuk-do where the plains meet the foothills of Jirisan. The city occupies a basin cut by the Yocheon stream, and the map shows a compact centre of streets on both banks, with bridges tying the two sides together. Around it, rice fields fill the flat ground and wooded ridges close in from the east.
The city is known throughout Korea as the setting of the Chunhyang story, one of the country's best-loved classical tales. Gwanghallu, the pavilion and garden that play a central part in it, still stands in the middle of the city, and its ponds and small bridges appear on the map as a detailed green pocket among the regular streets.
To the east, the land rises toward Jirisan National Park, and Nangen serves as one of the gateways to the mountains. A Nangen map poster frames a city between plain and upland: a river through its middle, a historic garden at its heart and hills gathering at the edges of the sheet.
The river curves through the city and gives the map a gentle central line, with streets and bridges arranged along both banks.
The historic pavilion garden connected to the Chunhyang tale forms a small, finely detailed area of ponds and paths in the middle of the urban grid.
To the east the street pattern gives way to ridges and valleys leading toward Jirisan, softening the edges of the map with open, rising ground.
