Te mapa
Tsushima city covers almost the whole of Tsushima island in the Korea Strait, midway between Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. On the map the island is long and narrow, and its coastline is one of the most intricate in Japan: countless inlets, headlands and small islands, with Asō Bay cutting deep into the middle.
Most of the island is steep and forested, so settlements sit in small harbours at the foot of valleys. Izuhara, the main town and port in the south, is a close cluster of streets packed between the hills and the water. On clear days the Korean coast can be seen from the island's northern tip.
A Tsushima map poster suits the island's complex shape. At a wider scale it shows the ragged outline of the whole island, and closer in it shows the port town's tight streets against the sea. Either way, the coastline is the main feature.
A deep, branching bay cuts into the middle of the island with dozens of inlets and islets. On the poster its outline looks almost like lace.
The main town is packed into a narrow valley that opens onto the harbour. Its dense streets are squeezed between steep hills and the water's edge.
Mountains run the length of the island with few roads crossing them. On the map that interior is mostly empty, with roads keeping close to valleys and coasts.
