Te mapa
Waegwan is the seat of Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province, just northwest of Daegu. The town lies along the east bank of the Nakdong River, the longest river in South Korea, and the water is the dominant feature of any map here: a broad, pale band running north to south, crossed by several bridges and lined with riverside parks and embankments.
The river has played a hard role in the town's history. During the Korean War, in 1950, the Nakdong formed part of the Pusan Perimeter and heavy fighting took place around Waegwan. The old steel railway bridge, partly destroyed in the war and later kept as a pedestrian crossing and memorial, remains one of the town's best-known sights.
A Waegwan map poster suits those with family in Chilgok, veterans and their descendants, and people who served at the nearby US Army installation of Camp Carroll. The composition is strong: a dense town on one bank, apartment blocks and fields spreading across the plain, the Gyeongbu railway and expressway running alongside, and hills closing the frame on both sides.
The wide river divides the map into two halves, its sandbars, parks and embankments forming the strongest and most recognisable shape on the poster.
A historic steel bridge crosses the river beside newer road spans, a slender line on the map with a long story tied to the events of 1950.
Dense streets and apartment blocks gather along the east bank, with the railway and main roads running parallel to the river through the centre.
